Visit to Valletta Cruise Port by the Hon. Minister for Tourism, Dr Edward Zammit Lewis

During an official visit at Valletta Cruise Port on Thursday 24th April, the Hon. Edward Zammit Lewis, Minister for Tourism, said that Malta enjoys a solid reputation as a reliable, professional and competitive Port. The Minister added that cruise visitors are vital for the local economy and it is important that cruise passengers calling Malta, depart with a positive impression of the country.

 “We must keep in mind that cruise passengers are amongst our leading long-term investment since they have the potential to be Malta’s finest Ambassadors”, Dr Edward Zammit Lewis.

During his visit, the Minister praised the initiatives taken by the Directors stating that, according to studies commissioned by Valletta Cruise Port, passengers who visited Malta generated around €1.9 million in direct expenditure during the first quarter of 2014.

He also referred to the cruise passenger statistics released this week that show, that the total cruise passenger traffic during the first quarter of this year, reached 38,138 passengers, i.e. an increase of 68.4% or 15,490 passengers over the same period last year.

During this period, Malta received 23 cruise liner calls – 10 more than last year.

Minister Zammit Lewis stressed the importance of the continued development of the cruise industry and for this reason Government will continue to work with Valletta Cruise Port to enhancing port services and support efforts aimed at improving cruise berthing facilities in Gozo.

Waqt żjara fil-Valletta Cruise Port, il-Ministru għat-Turiżmu Dr. Edward Zammit Lewis qal li Malta kisbet reputazzjoni tajba għal Port affidabbli, professjonali u kompetittiv. Il-viżitaturi tal-kruċiera huma importanti ħafna għall-ekonomija lokali tagħna kif ukoll għall-istabbiltà tal-gżejjer tagħna, żied il-Ministru għat-Turizmu filwaqt li huwa daqstant kruċjali l-impressjoni pożittiva li jħallu dawn il-viżitaturi dwar Malta.

‘Irridu nżommu f’moħħna li l-passiġġieri tal-kruċieri huma fost l-akbar investiment fit-tul  u li dawn għandhom il-potenzjal li jkunu l-aqwa Ambaxxaturi ta’ Malta’, sostna Dr. Edward Zammit Lewis.

Il-Ministru għat-Turiżmu faħħar l-impenn tal-inizjattivi meħuda mid-Diretturi fejn esprima li passiġġieri li żaru Malta ġġeneraw mal-€1,900,000 fl-infiq fl-ewwel kwart tal-2014, skont studji kkummissjonati mill-Valletta Cruise Port stess.

Ta’ min jinnota wkoll l-istatistika li ħarġet din il-ġimgħa li matul l-ewwel kwart tal-2014, it-traffiku totali tal-passiġġieri tal-cruise liners f'Malta kien ta’ 38,138 passiġġier, li jfisser żieda ta’ 68.4% jew 15,490 passiġġier meta mqabbel mal-istess perjodu fl-2013.

Matul dan il-perjodu, il-Valletta Cruise Port irċeviet sejħiet ta’ 23 cruise liner. Dan ifisser 10 aktar milli fl-2013.

Għal dan il-għan Dr. Edward Zammit Lewis saħaq fuq l-importanza għat-tkomplija ta’ żvilupp tal-industrija tal-kruċiera fosthom li l-Gvern se jkompli jaħdem mal-Valletta Cruise Port biex itejbu l-prodott tal-cruise port u li jappoġġja l-isforzi biex jittejbu l-faċilitajiet ta' rmiġġ għal kruċieri f'Għawdex.
