Grand Anniversary Concert: A Grand Success
On Sunday 11th May 2014, Valletta’s historic Pinto Wharf played host to an evening of classical music from the 19th century performed by the Għaqda Mużikali Marija Bambina, Banda Vittorja of Naxxar. The concert – aptly titled Grand Anniversary Concert – celebrated the 25th anniversary of the wind band within the Band Club and the 200th year from the birth of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone.
After opening with the overture to Verdi's standard repertory piece La Forza Del Destino, the band, under the direction of resident conductor Mro Roderick Bugeja, paid homage to Maltese composer Antonio Nani with a beautifully realized rendition of I Cavalieri di Malta. The concert also featured a selection of woodwind band favourites including Holst’s Second Suite in F for Military Band and Smith’s Fantasia for Alto Saxophone where the band was joined by guest soloist Antonio Mollica.
This was the groundwork to the pièce de résistance of the evening, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. The 70-plus strong band gave an impeccable delivery of the 1874 suite and each of the ten movements was accompanied by a series of digital artistic displays purposely created by Robert Spiteri.
In the concert’s closing performance, the band played the band anthem Innu Marcia “Vittoria” composed by the club’s former music director, Mro John E. Borg.
Her Excellency the President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca presided over the concert, together with band club president the Hon. Dr Michael Farrugia and other club officials, and music enthusiasts.
